Banter about attunement

Aside

Chess Event in Karazhan

There are many blog posts at the moment about attunement; love it or hate it.

Like all things there is a benefit, and a cost to that choice – which changes as your playstyle and perspective changes. I like attunement as I can know that the player has at the very least done some content.

I dislike attunement as it means I cannot gracefully skip content to the stage my alt was/is at. There is no right answer, which is probably why attunements were removed. Too much of a grey area led to angst, which then absorbed far too much time.

Overall I like attunements more than I dislike them, and think that they could have a valuable place in world of warcraft.

While I agree that creating very large attunement paths is a barrier which is difficult for some, and could even be problematic for raiders who switch characters (or whatever) there was something great in the story aspects of the attunements.

eg. Getting the Karazhan key was interesting from a story perspective. It took a small amount of additional time and effort, but it was entertaining and interesting.

If the attunements were part of the general story, in content which was not repeat-gated (eg. one after another) then they could return with my support. Perhaps the attunement is for the 5man to raid step, rather than for each raid step?

Perhaps also start the stories and the attunement chains as the leveling experience (e.g. the Marshal Windsor UBRS key), and therefore the story plays through the experience, which leads into the raids.

Make it so that the players would be foolish not to take the opportunity (Wrath Gate questline, or the Battered Hilt quests) and you’ll see more game lovers than haters.

A new old helm

Quick post to flaunt my Warlock finally getting his T4 Helm from Prince. Karazhan is mainly a badge run for me, and the helm I replaced was only about +10 spell damage behind the T4 and had better stats. Still, I’m happy. I’ve passed on that roll about 3 or 4 times so that others could get it, and the other night I was the only eligible toon. Huzzah!

Long weekend update

Wine CountryI had a ball this long weekend, and that was due to one thing – flexibility in my social life (setting my highest priority as not having a list of priorities).

The girl returned from two weeks away and we celebrated her return by going to a few bbqs, a few dvds, and a wine trip spread over the long weekend. An absolute highlight was sitting on a small deck in the winery with a glass of wine and watching nothing happen. It was relaxing, and I took that bit of calm around with me for the rest of the weekend.

Second was the good bbqs. The first was in a groovy apartment complex just off greenhill road (plush, designed, and well presented), and the second was at a mate’s place in the north east suburbs (relaxed, nerdy, and very politically incorrect). It was like having two very different lives and stepping between them as mood permitted.

300vsDozerWarcraft was also great this weekend too. The guild’s Kara Group 2 was able to do a full clear of Karazhan, and my Tankadin was along for the ride as an Off-tank. The group 1 and group 2 thing is working out well, and I’m sure keen to see a few of the guildies get into something beyond a 10 man, and Gruul’s is the current target. We have the toon numbers, but not sure about the class mix.

I did hear that we’re still having teething problems with the Group 1 & 2 thing, but I have hope that we’ll find a happy place soon. Running two groups favours the guys who either are just new to Kara, or wish to take Alts through. Getting fully Kara geared is a good achievement, and certainly a pre-req for later stuff like Gruul. It also means a lot of hard work for a few guys who we have to get better geared, myself included. If only we could raid on weeknights rather than only on Fridays and sometimes Saturdays.

Of course I was stoked when I picked up a tanking Ring, Boots and Cloak in Kara; and also a Trinket and Shield for my Healing set. Healing gear is still way below what is useful (only +700-ish), but as time progresses it’ll improve. Tanking wise I’m getting much higher HP and my Def score is now 500. Thats plenty, so I can now start thinking about the +dam gear as well. I’ll also start to grab any plate dps gear that might go to DE as an off-set too. Got to think about the future grind, and hopefully there will be a way to level as Prot to 80, but if not having some Ret gear will be handy.

bulldozerImages are stolen – wine shot is San Francisco wine region (yum), and the tanking shot is from Something Awful’s “300 vs. Bulldozer”. Thats a great tank name by the way: Bulldozer – have to be a Warrior Tank. You could call a Druid Meatshield, and a pally Radioactive, because they pulse with light and damage.

Now I’m rambling.

Kara Class Requirements

kara art shotAfter a little discussion in guild, a list of stats required for entry to Karazhan is a handy thing. Here is a list of suggested requirements for each class, with specs noted. I’ve tried to keep the requirements low, assuming that you wouldn’t have a group where everyone is at the minimums.

Warning: This is from the Interwebs, and I am no expert!

Blunt Update

Captain America Avatar3 days is too long to have a headache. Tired, grumpy, and altogether in a very nasty mood – so this will be short (reaching for pills as I type).

  • Grabbed a Crystalforged Sword for my Paladin, then added the Unholy enchant. Unholy is a crappy enchant but its all I had at short notice. Once I’ve got an idea of a better one, it’ll be straight on. Thanks to the Guildies for the advice, it was an immediate upgrade.
  • Warlock is now Exalted with Kara (the V. Eye) which means a slight ring upgrade, and access to an enchant that I cant cast yet.
  • Leveling my Druid on Horde, which is fun, but taking longer every level. Its not long until it will take some serious time to get each bar, and thats when the fun slows down too. Goal for now is to get to level 30 for the Travel form.
  • Finally got a 6 of Furies, which will complete my Furies Deck – bring on Vengence! Now just need to wait till the next Darkmoon Faire, which is probably a few weeks away. This might also have me at 10,000 health unbuffed, which means I’ll be less killable.
  • I need to farm and do daily quests, which means the same thing to me. Gold equals improvement at this stage, so its time to be a gold farmer.

Need to remember to say sorry to my girlfriend too, odds are I’ve said something over the past few days which was mean.

You have to love Kara

Last night was one of the best runs I’ve had for loot, but also a very educational run for other (better) reasons.

The lessons I took away from the run are not new to me, but they were really highlighted.

DPS is not as important as some other affects.
I used Curse of Tongues on most of the caster trash/adds, and I think it made a real difference to how easy tha trash was to drop. I knew that banish was a huge advantage, but also started to direct fire harder on trash, especially when it gets close to death. If I pull aggro and it was a small HP% left, then I’ll just take a few hits and Shadowburn the bastard.

Boss Timers are critical.
Curator has this great period where he takes extra damage, and timers can help load up the damage, especially for warlocks with Curse of Doom.

I’ll have to find a boss-mod that I can switch on as needed for that Boss.

Keep a Soulstone created at all times
Keeping a soulstone created to pop on a rezzer saved us, and the one time I almost didn’t worry we wiped. A good positive lesson.

Lastly I was lucky to get the Bands of Nefarious Deeds from Maiden, and then when nobody else in the raid wanted Robe of Elder Scribes from Nightband; well it was Christmas.

Thank you to all the Endeavour guys and gals.
