Which? Unholy vs Frost presence for PvE DPS

In the 5.0.4 Mists changes again the style and some of the details for Presences for DKs. All the detail of the changes can be put aside as the rule remains unchanged from Cataclysm: All PvE DPS DKs use Unholy Presence.

If you wish to know more about the changes then I highly recommend the summary threads on the EJ forums, as they are concise and clear. In fact the thread covers far more than just the presence, it gives good reasons for most recommendations, and tells you when the choice is immaterial. Go forth and commit mayhem.

Why? As noted on the EJ Forum:

  • Frost Presence underwent a large, very RP-driven change. It now increases Runic Power generation by 20% and reduces the duration of effects that remove control of your character by 20%. Frost Presence also reduces the cost of Frost Strike by 15 RP and thus makes it mandatory for all Frost DKs. But wait you say, this doesn’t help us with AoE at all! Yeah, apparently they made this with Frost spec in mind, so we will no longer be dabbling in other presences. I guess it felt like we were sharing their toothbrush. Our bad.
  • Unholy Presence now increases attack speed and rune regeneration by 10% and increases movement speed by 15%. Also, the 1.0 sec GCD is now a baseline regardless of presence. (Note: Boot enchants still do not stack with UP.)
  • Each spec now gets an Improved Presence effect as a passive. Again, this coupled with the changes to Frost Presence (above) entices us to stick with Unholy Presence at all times.

Happy Killing, TyphoonAndrew
